about

Dear Friend,

Around 2019, I began to explore meditation. At one point, I was meditating for a hour at a time twice a day. In one of my meditation sessions, the title ‘Letters to My Future Best Friends’ came to me. I knew it was a title for an album, but not much more. As I continued with my meditation sessions, more and more ideas came to me about the album.

I began to write and record songs for the album. Whenever I would get stuck or feel like I had writer’s block, I would sit in meditation. Ideas I would have never come to on my own would enter my mind. Being still and letting go of the need to control my thoughts was proving to be beneficial. I had never experienced anything quite like this before. The idea of being comfortable in stillness and observing my thoughts without attaching to them was quite freeing. It also opened me up to so many creative possibilities. I am still mystified as to where to these ideas come from? How is it that I can just “sit” and then they appear seemingly out of nowhere.

Albums, books, movies, Netflix, and other shows also were sources to stay inspired. I am not sure if they inspired the album directly, but they certainly helped maintain my uplifted spirit. Being in a good mood for me, is crucial to wanting to create.

In 2020, I did make an attempt at doing the album. I thought I was done. I moved on and did other projects. I am constantly committed to improving and being the best I can be. I improve through growth and expansion.

I had been taking in copious amounts of information from a variety of sources. It was like I was attending a university. The difference was that I got to pick my major and the courses I wanted to take. Mainly I was taking information from Reddit, YouTube Channels, and Wikipedia. I was hand picking specialists of specialized interests I had. It felt like such a unique time where no matter how niche one’s interests were…you could find someone who knew more than you about that topic. A lot of times those niche specialists had created a method for teaching their skills to you. I was right there to soak it up. I wanted to know every aspect of my wide ranging passions…everything from music production, music theory, singing, guitar, piano, harmony, melody, to philosophy, spirituality, and writing to creativity in general. If I was interested in it, I wanted to find the limits of it and incorporate my findings in a fusion cocktail of these seemingly dissimilar topics.

Once those other projects were completed, I had gone through a boat load of growth and expansion, and I was looking for the next project I wanted to do.

In reflection, it came to me that ‘Letters to My Future Best Friends’ was a great idea, but it did not get a fair chance. I went back and listened to my initial version of it. I realized that with all of the growth and expansion that I have experienced in the interim, I could execute this album on a much higher level.

So it became my focus to re-write the songs or replace the songs and write some new songs. It became my mission to make the album the best album I had ever done. I want to offer the very best of what I was capable of creating in this time. I wanted it to be a culmination of all of the growth and expansion I had been experiencing.

It is now 2022, and it has come time for me to take the paint brush off of the canvas and release ‘Letters to My Future Best Friends’ out into the wild. Perhaps my future best friends will be people I get to meet…perhaps not. Those that came before me and inspired me…some of them I met and knew and some of them I did not. Such is life.

Check out the credits for the people who I want to thank who were either directly or indirectly responsible for this creation.

“Should You Need Me” is dedicated to Eric and all that you are feeling after your loss.

released August 21, 2022

‘Letters to My Future Best Friends’ is the fifth studio album by Saf Ro. Released in 2022 following the mandatory COVID-19 quarantine shutdown across the world. The album features Saf Ro’s innovative approach to songwriting and musical arranging which simultaneously explores new directions in Psychedelic, RnB, and Alternative music.

‘Letters to My Future Best Friends’ is an experience that speaks to the desires of free thinking independent people. People trying to make a connection to their past and bring it to their present. .

The album is a special blend of Urban Rock Art. It has enough of what you are familiar for you to feel comfortable being lead into places you have not been. It is what would happen if you were to cross-pollinate the interests of Prince, Nine Inch Nails, and St. Vincent’s fan bases for a whole new musical style.
